Most price guides give one round range with no date, so I counted. On October 27, 2026, I read all 8,413 listings in TruckPaper's Dump Trucks category and grouped the 6,260 with a price by axles, condition and model year. I'm Steve Woods, a truck dispatcher at TruckSprint with 9 years in trucking.

These are asking prices, not sale prices. Sellers often take less, and listings rarely include tax, title or dealer fees.

New tandems through quints sit within about $50,000 of each other, since most share a heavy chassis with a different axle and body package. Used prices spread much wider, because age matters more than axles once a truck has worked a few seasons. About 1 in 4 listings shows no usable price, mostly new trucks dealers quote on request. The types of dump trucks chart shows what each setup looks like.

A 2019-2023 tri-axle had a median ask about 2.7 times that of a 2013-or-older one.

Older trucks are cheaper to buy and often dearer to keep running: emissions parts, hoist and body can all wear out together. Price the repairs before you price the truck.

What moves the price of one truck

  1. Body. Material, length and side height. A lighter body leaves more of the legal gross for payload.
  2. Engine and transmission. Horsepower, automatic or manual, and any overhaul history.
  3. Engine hours. Dump trucks idle and run the PTO a lot, so hours tell you more than miles.
  4. Lift axles and tarp. Working ones add money; broken ones subtract it.
  5. Paperwork. Maintenance records, a clean title and a recent annual inspection.

ATRI's figures average all surveyed trucks, mostly tractor-trailers; dump work is harder on tires and brakes. The heavy vehicle use tax is $100 at 55,000 lb taxable gross plus $22 per 1,000 lb over, up to $550 (26 U.S.C. 4481). How much does a dump truck weigh?

Empty weight varies with chassis and body, so weigh yours on a certified scale; that tare goes on every haul ticket. Loaded weight is set by law. Most tandem and larger dump trucks are Class 8, over 33,000 lb GVWR, per the DOE weight classes. On the Interstate, the Bridge Formula (23 CFR 658.17) holds a tandem at 20 ft to 51,000 lb gross and a tri-axle at 22 ft to 56,500 lb. See dump truck capacity for payload by material and dump truck sizes for every setup.

How much do dump truck drivers make?

BLS doesn't split out dump truck drivers. Drivers of trucks over 26,000 lb GVWR count as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers (SOC 53-3032):

BLS, May 2025, SOC 53-3032National
Mean hourly wage$28.71
Mean annual wage$59,710
Median annual wage$58,640

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, SOC 53-3032 · checked 2026-10

On public works, a prevailing wage determination can set the hourly rate; see prevailing wage hauling rates by state.

Before you buy

A truck earns only with tickets to run, and contractors can take weeks to pay. Dump truck factoring explains advances on those tickets, and starting a dump truck business covers the filings. TruckSprint no longer dispatches dump trucks, but if you also run a 26 ft box truck, our desk can keep it loaded.

Method

All TruckPaper Dump Trucks listings (new and used) were read on October 27, 2026: 8,413 after removing duplicates. Listings without a price or under $5,000 were dropped, leaving 6,260. Setup comes from each listing's rear-axle field; 1,687 priced listings left it blank and count only in "All dump trucks". Single-axle trucks were split at Class 5 by listed GVWR class or chassis model. Ranges run from the 25th to the 75th percentile. We'll refresh it quarterly.

Questions carriers ask

How much is a dump truck?

On October 27, 2026, the median asking price was $233,000 new and $73,900 used, across 6,260 priced listings. New tri-axles had a median of $245,900, new tandems $231,900, and new light Class 3-5 dump trucks $85,900.

How much is dump truck insurance?

No public source publishes a dump-truck average. ATRI's 2025 survey put insurance at about $0.106 per mile across all trucks, mostly tractor-trailers: about $4,240 at 40,000 miles. Your state, record, years in business and limits decide your real premium.

How much does a dump truck load of gravel cost?

At the pit, little. USGS put construction sand and gravel at an average $14.50 per metric ton in 2025, about $13.15 per short ton, so 12 tons is about $158 of material. The haul, the yard's margin and tax make up the rest of a delivered price.

How much is a mining dump truck?

Makers of large rigid mining haul trucks don't publish prices. They sell by quote, often bundled with parts and service, so any single number online is a guess. These trucks aren't road legal and are bought by mines and quarries.

Is it cheaper to buy a used dump truck?

To buy, yes: the used median was $73,900 against $233,000 new. To own, not always. Older trucks can need the engine, hoist and body work at once. Price the repairs and get the maintenance records before you compare.

The truck is paid for monthly. Make sure the haul money isn't paid quarterly.

Contractors can take 30 days or more to pay a haul ticket, and the truck payment won't wait. We refer factoring requests to RTS Financial, and the quote is free.
