DOT drug test cost: about 69 a test, and what a full year of testing runs

A single DOT drug test costs $69 and a breath alcohol test $59 at one national consortium's published member prices (2026-10). The bigger number is the year: a consortium membership, a pre-employment test for each new CDL driver, and the random tests the 2026 FMCSA rates call for. The calculator below adds it up for your drivers.

Current FMCSA random rates

FMCSA random testing rate for 2026

FMCSA sets the minimum share of average CDL driver positions that must be randomly tested each year. For 2026:

FMCSA minimum annual random testing rates, 2026
TestMinimum annual rateMeaning for one driver position
Drug50%On average, 0.5 random drug tests per position per year
Alcohol10%On average, 0.1 random alcohol tests per position per year

The drug rate has been 50% since 2020. Random tests are unannounced and spread through the year (49 CFR 382.305). A one-driver company tests through a consortium pool, so your own selections can be more or fewer than the average.

Fractional tests are averages: in a consortium pool, any one driver may be picked more or less often. Post-accident and reasonable-suspicion tests are extra.

Per-driver vs flat plans

Consortium cost: per-driver vs flat plans

  • Per-driver pricing

You pay for each driver in the pool. At the published prices, that's $85 for the first and $25 for each one after. It fits one to a few trucks.

  • Flat fleet pricing

One price for unlimited drivers: $295/yr at the same consortium. It wins once you'd otherwise pay for 10+ drivers, and for seasonal fleets that add and drop drivers.

Compare what each plan includes: MRO review, Clearinghouse C/TPA designation, the policy template, and the certificate of enrollment for your audit file.

What moves the price

What moves the price of a DOT drug test

  1. 01

    The collection site

Clinics in a consortium's network charge the member price. Sites outside the network, or rural sites far from your lanes, can cost more or take longer.

  2. 02

    MRO review

A medical review officer reviews drug test results. Some consortiums include it; some bill it separately. Ask.

  3. 03

    Alcohol tests

Breath alcohol tests are a separate fee from drug tests, and need a trained technician.

  4. 04

    After-hours and on-site collections

Post-accident tests at night, on weekends, or at a job site usually cost more than a scheduled clinic visit.

  5. 05

    Who you test

Only CDL drivers are in the DOT program. A non-CDL 26 ft box truck or non-CDL hotshot doesn't add DOT testing costs.

FAQ

DOT drug test cost questions

How much does a pre-employment test cost?

At Vertical Identity's published member price, $69 for the DOT drug test, as of 2026-10. A pre-employment alcohol test isn't required by Part 382, though some employers run one. Prices at other consortiums and walk-in clinics vary, so check before you book.

How much does a DOT drug test cost?

About $69 per drug test and $59 per breath alcohol test at one national consortium's published member prices (2026-10). The yearly total depends on your membership, new hires and how often you're selected; the calculator above estimates it.

Who pays for a DOT drug test for an owner-operator?

You do. As an owner-operator with a CDL, you're the employer, so the membership and every test are your costs. Leased-on drivers are usually covered by the carrier they're leased to, under that carrier's program.

Are consortium fees tax deductible?

Drug testing and consortium fees are generally ordinary business expenses for a trucking company, but we're not tax advisers. Keep the receipts and ask your accountant how to record them.

How do I budget testing for seasonal drivers?

Budget a pre-employment test for every new CDL driver you hire, plus random tests on your average positions across the year. Four drivers for half a year count as two positions. A flat fleet membership ($295/yr published) can be cheaper than per-driver fees when drivers come and go.

Prices change; check the consortium's site before you budget. Requirements: owner-operator drug testing requirements. Clearinghouse steps: Clearinghouse registration.
